One in a Trillion
Author : Josh Romond
“One more time. CAN ANYONE HEAR ME?â€
“Ugh, would you please STOP already?â€
“H-hello?â€
“Did it ever occur to you that simply no one’s interested in what you have to say?â€
“You can hear me! You can hear my thoughts!â€
“For quite some time now, actually. You’ve practically been on non-stop broadcast since you figured this little trick out.â€
“Why didn’t you ever respond?â€
“We don’t have much in common.â€
“Oh. What’s your name?â€
“Believe it or not I actually have more important things to do at the moment, so if you don’t mind…â€
“What are you doing?â€
“…None of your business. Now, really.â€
“I-I’m sorry.â€
“….â€
“It’s just that being surrounded by people’s thoughts night and day is just so terribly… lonely.â€
“….â€
“I was giving up hope that I’d ever find anyone to talk to. Anyone who understands. I was beginning to think about, you know, ending it all.â€
“Yes, that’s sort of what we hoped.â€
“What?â€
“Nothing.â€
“’We?’ You know others?â€
“Ugh.â€
“How many of us are there?â€
“Well, counting you, five.â€
“Five? That’s it? Five?â€
“One in a trillion, love.â€
“Where are you from?â€
“No where near you, I’m sure.â€
“But I bet I know it! I love to study charts and maps and that kind of stuff.â€
“Is that so? Well, I only know the local name so I suppose I’ll just have to sift through your vast pile of cartographic ‘stuff’ for one you’ll recognize. Pardon me.â€
“What? Uh, ah! AH!â€
“You’re really making this quite difficult.â€
“Stop!â€
“Ah, here we are.â€
“How… how’d you do that? Go into my memories?â€
“Figure it out for yourself. Now… oh. Oh my.â€
“What?â€
“It seems we’re practically… neighbors.â€
“REALLY? You’re from Connecticut?â€
“Never heard of it. According to your brain I’m from M33.â€
“M33?â€
“Yes, galaxy M33.â€
“Oh.â€
“About forty-five degrees antispinward of galactic north to be precise.â€
“Ohmygod.â€
“The local name is a tad more eloquent believe it or not.â€
“Ohmygod.â€
“Now if you’ll excuse me I must get back to work. Go find someone else to bother, won’t you love?â€

The Past
365tomorrows launched August 1st, 2005 with the lofty goal of providing a new story every day for a year. We’ve been on the wire ever since. Our stories are a mix of those lovingly hand crafted by a talented pool of staff writers, and select stories received by submission.
The archives are deep, feel free to dive in.

Flash Fiction
"Flash fiction is fiction with its teeth bared and its claws extended, lithe and muscular with no extra fat. It pounces in the first paragraph, and if those claws aren’t embedded in the reader by the start of the second, the story began a paragraph too soon. There is no margin for error. Every word must be essential, and if it isn’t essential, it must be eliminated."

Submissions
We're open to submissions of original Science or Speculative Fiction of 600 words or less. We are only accepting work which you previously haven't sold or given away the rights to. That means your work must not have been published elsewhere, either in print or on the web. When your story is accepted, you're giving us first electronic publication rights and non-exclusive subsequent publication rights. You retain ownership over your story. We are not a paying market.
